Welcome to the IGS British Branch
Monday, 19 May 2008

Welcome to the home page for the British Branch of the International Glaciology Society. I hope that this page will become a place to share stories and pictures of lab/fieldwork experiences, to promote research, encourage sharing and collaboration and to advertise opportunities. To participate you will need to register for an account using the link on the left. This will give you access to the "submit an item" link, with which you can add a news item, or let others know where your field work will take you this season. In the near future there will be a forum for discussion amonst our group (social and academic). I look forward to watching the groups membership grow, and our science productivity flourish.

  • Under-ice flood speeds up glacier
Great floods of water beneath the Antarctic ice sheet can now be linked directly to the speed at which that ice moves towards the ocean, scientists say.
  • Supercomputer to study glaciers
Scientists will be able to better predict what is going to happen to the world's climate with the aid of a new supercomputer, it is claimed.
  • Sea level rise by 2100 'below 2m'
Natural restrictions on the way glaciers move means sea level rise above 2m this century is very unlikely, researchers say.

  • [press release] New visualisation of South Georgia
A new visualisation tool for exploring the subantarctic islands of South Georgia is unveiled today (22 Oct 08). The South Georgia Geographic Information System (SGGIS) enables researchers and the public to see the islands' environmental landscape in a completely new way and will help to manage and protect the abundant wildlife that lives there, such as the wandering albatross. The Government of S...
  • [news] Modelling Circumpolar Deep Water intrusions on the Amundsen Sea continental shelf, Antarctica
Ocean modellers at BAS have been studying the circulation in the Amundsen Sea, in order to understand what drives relatively warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the continental shelf. CDW is responsible for the high melt rates observed beneath the floating tongues of the major outlet glaciers that drain into Pine Island Bay. These glaciers have thinned and accelerated over the past decade and...
